Prof. Dr. Gregor Dorfleitner

The teaching program of the Department of Finance follows a modern and relatively quantitative view of finance. The contents comprise corporate finance dealing with investment and financing decisions of corporations and the valuation of projects and businesses, as well as financial risk management, as performed by banks and insurance companies and increasingly by ‘common’ companies to ensure long term economic survival. The Department of Finance offers a financial management course in the first phase of the bachelor’s degree and a corporate finance course in the second phase. In the master’s degree specialized courses within both the finance major and the quantitative finance major are offered.

The teaching is embedded in the department’s research, but besides a solid theoretical foundation it is also practically oriented.

Research topics

  • Quantitative risk management
  • Microfinance, sustainable investment
  • Weather, energy and credit derivatives
  • Business valuation
  • Computational finance

Teaching goals

The primary goal of our teaching program is to develop students’ understanding of main financial instruments, i.e. they should gain a comprehensive knowledge of how to apply and evaluate the relevant techniques in the field of finance.

In addition, they will be prepared with the necessary degree of sophistication of quantitative skills (including real implementation). Our program also puts emphasis on the combination with other important fields like statistics, financial services or econometrics. Graduates will be well prepared with skills necessary for pursuing careers in both financial institutions and corporate areas of finance (e.g. treasury, controlling or risk management).
